Lipton is the world’s largest tea brand, available in more than 110 countries. With an inspiring heritage, Lipton has grown over the years into a well-loved and purposeful name.

When Sir Thomas Lipton bought his first Ceylon plantation (now Sri Lanka) back in the 1890s, tea was expensive. But he found ways to make production and distribution more efficient – so people from all backgrounds could enjoy a delicious cuppa. He was the first to sell loose tea directly to the masses – and even to sell tea bags.

Today, Lipton offers an array of tea and infusion-based drinks. Their wide product range includes healthy green and black teas, loose leaf tea and tea bags, zero-calorie infusions, organic blends, beautiful tea gift packs, and even Lipton Ice Tea soft drinks.

Lipton is here to bring people together, turning each cuppa into a chance to connect. That’s a potential 100 billion moments each year.

Lipton’s committed to improving the wellbeing of tea drinkers and the people who produce tea, while also looking after the planet. In 2007, Lipton was the first major tea brand to use sustainably sourced tea on a major scale with the certification of its plantation in Kenya by Rainforest Alliance. Since 2015, the majority of their tea bag teas have been Rainforest Alliance Certified™. Lipton is now working towards making all their tea bags fully plant-based and biodegradable, and removing all plastic content from their packaging.

In 1869 Arthur Brooke, the son of a tea merchant, opened a tea shop in Manchester. That was the start of the Brooke Bond family of teas – including the famous Red Label – which are enjoyed around the world from Russia and India, to Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

By 1957, Brooke Bond were perhaps the largest tea company in the world, selling one-third of the tea sipped in both Britain and India. Interestingly, while there was a Mr Brooke, there was no Mr Bond: the ‘Brooke Bond’ brand name was chosen because it signalled a ‘bond’ to its customers to provide reliable, high-quality tea.

In the 21st century, Brooke Bond’s commitment to quality lives on. Brew lovers can now choose from a wide range of products including tea bags and loose tea in lots of tasty varieties.

In the 1930s, PG tips was launched in the UK as a loose-tea leaf. Originally called Pre-Gest-Tee – as it was thought that tea aided digestion – grocers and travelling salesmen soon shortened that to ‘PG’. The name stuck. The brand added ‘tips’ to highlight that they only use the top two leaves and bud of each plant.

Three decades later, PG tips introduced their first tea bag to rave reviews. But that was only the beginning. In 1996, they created the famous pyramid tea bag. This innovative design acts like a miniature teapot, giving the leaves more room to move.PG tips use only 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified™ tea – in fact, they were the first tea brand in Britain to carry the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal. They’ve continued to make positive changes, such as switching to biodegradable tea bags and removing plastic from their products.

PG tips aren’t just passionate about making tasty cuppas: they’re committed to making sure their tea keeps building communities, improving people’s livelihoods, and respecting the environment.

Making our teas future-fit

As ekaterra, we now own the number one brand share in tea in 58 countries, generating revenues of 2 billion euros in 2020. But we want to do more than lead the market; we want to regenerate the entire industry. Since 1869, we’ve been evolving our products to meet the ever-changing requirements of tea drinkers in three important ways:

Sustainability

We’re always working to reduce our impact on the environment. We’re making all our tea bags plant-based and all our packaging fully recyclable. This will make our tea bags fully renewable and compostable, circling back to Mother Nature. Many of our brands have already made the switch, and the others are well on their way to joining them by 2025. We’re also working on removing the plastic film from our boxes. We’ve already started this process, and will be fully switched over by 2025.

Innovation

We’re proud of our teas’ heritage, but we’re always ready to change things up. From pyramid tea bags that steep smarter for a better brew to zero-calorie infusions, we’re reinventing the classic cuppa to suit every need – but never compromising on taste. This includes our herbal tea ranges, which provide alternatives to traditional caffeine varieties. We’ve also begun fortifying our black and green teas with added vitamins for enhanced immune support  to help consumers get the most from every cup.

Certification

We’re committed to a sustainably-sourced future for all our teas. Many are now Rainforest Alliance Certified™. This means that the tea is produced in a way that supports environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

In 2007, we were the first major tea company to use sustainably sourced tea on a large scale with the certification of our Kericho plantation in Kenya. And since 2015 all of our Lipton teas in tea bags globally are Rainforest Alliance Certified™ too. The herbs we use in our branded products are increasingly sustainably sourced – such as FairWild certified herbs – meaning they are legally, ethically and sustainably harvested in ways that are good for tea workers, farmers and local communities.
